A downloadable project

Deep in the forest is a nature focussed real time game environment created to a texel density of 1024 per meter with special attention given to learning the procedural foliage tools within UE4. The scene itself was broken down into two major milestones, milestone one was the surrounding nature which has been generated using a mixture of terrain materials for the ground foliage and procedural volumes for the trees and rocks. The second milestone was the unique cabin scene contained within the forest which was manually constructed and set dressed. The entire scene is dynamically lit using DFAO, fog and volumetrics to help push the atmosphere of the environment.

The story for the scene is that the cabin was being used by a gang for narcotic creation, but the building has since been abandoned leaving the structure degrading, unkept and with areas of clumsily repaired damage, the overall theme of the scene taking inspiration from the far cry series.

The majority of the assets within the scene have been created from scratch with the exception of the ground foliage which utilises a selection of mega scan atlases to assist in pushing the realistic look for the vegetation. To ensure a fresh look for this project the atlases were mixed, matched and edited to create a new unique texture.

The programs used to create the environment included 3DS max (modelling), substance painter (unique texturing), substance designer (material creation), marvellous designer (fabric simulation), photoshop (image editing), SpeedTree (tree generation) and Z brush (sculpting).
